A Guide to Getting Married at The Hanford Garden

As a wedding photographer serving Northern California, I’ve visited & photographed couples at many event spaces.  While wine country is home to picturesque views and stunning wedding venues, The Hanford Garden stands out. In this guide, I’ll explain why it’s one of my all time favorites along with a few things to consider for couples planning their dream wedding.

Venue Features & Atmosphere at The Hanford Garden

Nestled in the heart of historic Sutter Creek, The Hanford Garden (formerly The Gardens at Sutter Creek) is surrounded by the charm of California’s Gold Rush era while also sitting in the center of Amador wine country. The venue feels like something straight out of a storybook. From its terraced gardens to its paved pathways and lush landscaping, it was designed with weddings in mind.

Couples have their choice of multiple event spaces, including a ceremony garden, cocktail grove, and reception garden, each with its own unique personality. Whether guests are sipping champagne under the shade of towering trees or dancing beneath twinkle lights on the outdoor dance floor, every corner of the property feels intentional and romantic.

Why Choose The Hanford Garden

When it comes to wine country wedding venues, The Hanford Garden is one I can’t help but recommend to my couples. It was built to make weddings not just beautiful but comfortable. The grounds feature built-in bars, central restrooms, and paved paths for easy access throughout the gardens. Both the bride and groom have designated suites to prepare for the day, offering privacy and convenience right on site. While the venue is primarily an outdoor space, there is a charming Maison building that houses the suites and restrooms, making it a practical hub for the day’s flow.

What truly sets this venue apart is the way it blends natural beauty with thoughtful design. The terraced layout allows every guest to have a clear view of the dance floor and main events, so no one feels left out of the celebration. Seasonal blooms ensure that no matter what time of year you choose, the gardens provide a breathtaking backdrop. For smaller gatherings, the venue even offers a discount for weddings with 60 guests or fewer. This California venue is a flexible option for both grand celebrations of up to 175 guests and more intimate affairs.

How to Choose the Right Wine Country Wedding Venue

When you’re searching for the perfect venue, there are a few considerations to keep in mind. First of all, the location should feel like you.  It should call to both of you and feel like a place you’d enjoy visiting apart from your wedding day. Finding a location that feels right is half the challenge. The other piece is making sure you choose a location that aligns with the vision you have for the big day. If you can find a venue that clicks with both aspects, you’re golden!

Considerations for Wine Country Wedding Venues

From a more logistical standpoint, there are a few more important factors to keep in mind in wine country:

Time of Year

The time of year can influence everything from the overall atmosphere to the guest experience, so it’s worth considering how the season aligns with your vision. Think about the natural colors and scenery the venue offers during that time. With Hanford Garden, you’ll have blooming gardens in spring, warm tones in fall, or lush greenery in summer. Weather conditions also play a big role, not only for comfort but for planning backup options if needed.

Guest Considerations

Beyond the setting itself, it’s essential to consider practical details like lodging and dining options for guests, especially those traveling from out of town. Accessibility should also be a priority, ensuring that elders or anyone with mobility challenges can comfortably enjoy the celebration.

Aesthetics

Finally, the venue should reflect your overall wedding theme, complementing your style so the space feels like an extension of your story. We covered this a bit in the previous paragraph, but it’s worth repeating!

Seasonal Weddings at The Hanford Garden

The Hanford Garden is truly beautiful year-round!  However, each season brings its own unique qualities worth mentioning.

Spring

Springtime is my personal favorite time of year for weddings at The Hanford Garden. The gardens are in full bloom, the weather is perfect, and it’s a lighter tourist season. It’s busy, but not nearly as crowded as other times.

Summer

The blooms are beautiful and vibrant during summer.  As temperatures begin to creep up, the venue has everything covered including umbrellas for added shade.

Fall

If you’re dreaming of jewel tones in your bridal palette, fall is your best bet. Autumn brings warm colors and a cozy atmosphere.

Winter

While winter does mean colder temps, it does not equate to snow in this area. For snowy backdrops, couples may want to look further up the hills (South Lake Tahoe or The Hideout in Upper Pioneer are great options!)

Things to Do in Sutter Creek CA

Sutter Creek is a quintessential small town comparable to, “…Stars Hollow or a Hallmark movie,” making it a charming place to visit for out of town guests.  This storybook town is brimming with coffee shops, wineries that people travel to visit from all over, and a variety of lodging options. From inns to hotels, guests have options of where to stay and none of them detract from the historic feel of the location. There are also plenty of places to grab a drink, and one of my favorite locations is the Speakeasy below Hotel Sutter. This entire place will transport you back to simpler times. Nearby are three other towns, only about 20 minutes away, to explore, filled with even more wineries. There are also lots of shops that are unique and cozy, multiple lakes, rivers, and tourist attractions nearby to get the full experience of the area.

Tips for Couples Getting Married at The Hanford Garden

If you choose The Hanford Garden as the location for the ceremony of your dreams, I have a bit of advice to provide! First, please know that carpooling can be helpful for this location. The venue offers plenty of parking, but it can fill up quickly! Most couples who stay in town are able to walk, as it’s about a 3 -5 min stroll to most lodging in the area. And, of course, if you have more questions about the venue or area, I’m always here to help!
