Do you want engagement photos but feel like you’ll be too tense to enjoy the process?! Trust me these tips to getting camera comfortable will make a worlds difference.
I’ve been there before myself, and even I know it is no fun to feel like you are stuck in the nerves that come with being in front of a camera.Since I relate to you in this way, I thought I’d offer up my top 5 tips to getting camera comfortable + recommendations that I give EVERY couple before the day of our shoot.
1. Location Matters
Let’s pick the location that feels familiar & good to you! I tell my couples that their home is just as good a place as any, especially for those more romantic soul to soul sessions. If you have a location you frequently visit or the hold a special place in your heart tell your photographer! This is a great way to feel confident when you already are so familiar with where we would be shooting.
2. Get Hands On
Actually get hands on with something! If you are the type of couple that shares a love for movie nights, camping, going on walks, fishing or really anything that connects the two of you aim for a session thats a bit more curated to this. As a narrative based photographer, I find that my couples always loosen up when they have something to do with their hands or a place to put their energy. Imagine cozying up to a campfire, roasting marshmallows and gazing into the fire… doesn’t that already feel better? This is an excellent way to document genuine moments & tell your story in a unique & authentic way.
3. Communication
The key to anything always seems to lead us back to communication. If you’re feeling stuck, unsure, have questions or want help curating this session to be creatively you, make sure to address your concerns. My favorite way to navigate this and nip it in the bud from the start is sending out multiple questionnaires to get to know my couples and going a step further scheduling a phone call or a zoom meeting. Making room for conversation before ever meeting in person will ensure that we don’t feel like total strangers walking into a session. Building a rapport well before I have a camera in your face is essential to a seamless and comfortable session.
4. When in doubt, focus on each other
That’s what we’re here to do to begin with! What better way to take the pressure off of a session. Your love brought us to your session so let it shine through. Don’t be afraid if you don’t know what to do with your hands, keep em on each other! Hold hands, eye contact, big hugs and so much more go into creating images that feel like you. If you are not a heavy PDA couple thats okay, stay true to that and go only as far as what you’re comfortable with. Kisses or no kisses, it’s your story.
And lastly
5. Be prepare to be yourself
The photos will be worth nothing if they don’t feel like you. Come as you are. While you will have my guidance I never will try to push you in a direction that feels forced. Your love story is unique for a reason.
